plateau: A large area of land with a fairly flat surface that is raised above the surrounding land is called a plateau. Plateaus are usually found in mountainous places. Plateaus usually have a sharp drop-off to the surrounding land.
polar cap: If the area near a pole is covered in ice or snow all year long, the area is called a polar cap. The Arctic and Antarctic zones on Earth are examples of polar caps.
